'Berg Tops the Field at Defiance Invite
The Heidelberg University men’s golf team had four top-25 finishers to help pave the way to the team championship at the Defiance Spring Invitational hosted by Defiance College at the Kettering Country Club April 10-11. Heidelberg, under the guidance of head coach Garrett Humes, has registered back-to-back top-five finishes to open its spring slate.
Heidelberg combined to shoot a 614 to claim the team championship by 14 strokes. Ohio Northern University took home runner-up honors at 628 followed by Trine University (630), Mount St. Joseph College (634) and Franklin College (647).
Leading the way for the Berg and topping the field was junior Zack Koinis (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion). Koinis took charge after round one and never let up. He finished at 144 (69, 75), four strokes ahead of second place. It is the second-straight outing that Koinis took home medalist honors. He is also the reining Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Kevin Lenhart (Arlington, Ohio / Arlington) backed Koinis in the top-five with a fourth place finish after shooting a 149 (74, 75).
Taking home 11th place was David Lilly (Greencastle, Ind. / Greencastle). He fired a 163 (80, 83), while Craig Meyer (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul) shot a 163 (80, 83) to tie for 22nd.
