Koinis Repeats as OAC Medalist
Junior Zack Koinis (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) of the Heidelberg University men’s golf team went from being the first ever Ohio Athletic Conference medalist in the history of the program to being the first to repeat the feat. Koinis took home medalist honors at the 2009 OAC Championships today, May 1, marking the second-consecutive season he has won the event. Otterbein College was the host institution and the event took place at the New Albany Country Club.
Koinis wasted little time in getting situated among the leaders at the championships. In round one Koinis fired a two-over par 74 to hold the top spo
t. He returned in round two and picked up right where he left off. He shot a 76 to finish at 150, claiming the championship by four strokes. Along the way he earned All-OAC honors. In 45 years that Heidelberg has been competing at the league championships, Koinis marks the 19th all-league selection.
As a team, the Berg had an impressive first day, which saw the team holding down the second spot after firing a 339. All nine teams settled in for day two and despite the Berg shooting a 332, the team finished in sixth. Otterbein claimed the team title with a 639 followed by Mount Union College (652).
Joining Koinis on the course and just missing all-conference honors was sophomore David Lilly (Greencastle, Ind. / Greencastle). Lilly shot a consistent 82 in both rounds to finish in a tie for 11th.
Craig Meyer (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul) competed in his final OAC Championships and stood 36th. He opened with an 89 and improved by one stroke in round two to finish with a 177.
Rounding out the Heidelberg competitors was Kevin Lenhart (Arlington, Ohio / Arlington) and Cory Peirson (Troy, Ohio / Troy). Lenhart, a junior, finished in 40th with a 180 (94, 86) followed by Peirson, a freshman, in 43rd with a 188 (99, 89).
