Oberlin, Ohio – September 1, 2009 – After a hard fought battle in the second half, the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team was defeated by Oberlin College 2-0. It was the season opener for both teams.
Heidelberg’s defense made Oberlin fight for every opportunity, especially in the second half. Head coach Brian Haley said it was a tale of two halves. “In the first half Oberlin came out strong; however we were much better in the second half,” Haley said. “Six first-year players played and they did not play like first-year players. Freshman defenders Alex Sanchez (Reno, Nevada / Earl Rooster) and Joel Oldham (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) played exceptional.”
Both of Oberlin’s goals came from a free kick. The first one came in the 24th minute while the second one came in the 80th minute.
Offensively, Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) led the Student Princes with two shots and two shots-on-goal. Also contributing was Grant Beck (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) with two shots and one shot-on-goal. Heidelberg totaled seven shots while Oberlin had nine.
The Berg will look to carry on the momentum they started in the second half to Friday’s game, September 4, when they host Albion College at 6:00 p.m.
