Tiffin, Ohio – September 23, 2009 – The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team beat Grove City College in overtime with a score of 1-0. Heidelberg is undefeated at home and improves to 5-2 on the season, while Grove City drops to 2-4-1.
With stellar defense on both teams, neither squad could find the back of the net for the first 90 minutes. Heidelberg changed that with 13 seconds into overtime, when Dillard Anu (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville) placed a touch pass to Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) which then McCarthy kicked the ball on rhythm to the low right post of the net for the game-winning goal. McCarhty has a team-leading three game-winning goals on the season.
Heidelberg’s Jon Kijowski (Norwalk, Ohio / Norwalk), Grant Beck (Roanoke, Texas / Keller), and Dillard Anu each had three shots on the night. Beck and Anu each had two shots on goal, while McCarthy led the team with five shots with two shots on goal.
The Berg’s Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) had seven saves on the day. Smith has earned four shutouts on the year.
Heidelberg looks to remain unbeaten at home as they host Case Western Reserve University, Saturday September 26, at 7:00 p.m.
