Oberlin, Ohio – September 15, 2010 – The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team won their third-straight as it beat Oberlin College 1-0.
The Berg improves to 4-1, while Oberlin falls to 2-5.
“Heidelberg played with determination and grit to grind out a win,” head coach Brian Haley said. “It wasn’t our best performance by far, but we got the result right.”
Heidelberg scored the lone goal of the game in 38th minute when sophomore Grant Beck (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) made a nice cross to senior Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) who would place the ball in the back of the net. This marked Buhrman’s second-straight game-winner on the season.
Making his presence felt on offense was freshman Erik Furst (Columbus, Ohio / Upper Arlington) who had two shots on goal. Senior Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) and junior Mike Harling (Manchester, England / Holy Cross) each had one on goal.
Sophomore goal keeper Mike Kenny (Rocky River, Ohio / Rocky River) gathered in a career-high six saves.
The Berg’s defenders played solid including senior Greg Acuna (Findlay, Ohio / Findlay), senior Jon Kijowski (Norwalk, Ohio / Norwalk), sophomore Justin James (Grapevine, Texas / Grapevine), and Erik Furst.
“I felt we created several good chances at times to finish Oberlin off – but lacked the composure to put in the final ball to [extend the lead],” said Haley. “A good aspect of the game was that most of Oberlin's shots were coming in from distance and were more speculative than real opportunities.”
“We certainly will not take anything for granted as we look to improve our performance on Saturday at Geneva College. We know we are better than what we showed tonight.”
Heidelberg is back in action Saturday, September 18 as it travels to Geneva College. The game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
