Marietta, Ohio – October 23, 2010 – Neither team could find the back of the net as the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team tied with Marietta College 0-0.
The Berg goes to 11-3-2 overall, 5-0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers move to 1-12-4, 1-5-1 against league foes.
“Full credit to Marietta, they worked hard,” head coach Brian Haley said. “There were too many people playing as individuals [for Heidelberg] today and not as a unit.”
Though neither squad could score, the teams combined for 36 shots (15 on goal) for the game.
Heidelberg held a 23-13 (10-5 on goal) shot advantage.
Leading the way offensively for the Berg was junior Mike Harling (Manchester, New England / Holy Cross) and senior Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) with three shots on goal apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) gathered in five saves on the day.
“We control our own destiny,” said Haley. “We have to refocus with the two remaining regular season games at home.”
The first of the two-game home stand will be Wednesday, Oct. 27 against Ohio Northern University at 7:00 p.m. under the lights of Mayer Field.
