Heidelberg Men's Soccer Returns to Road at Kenyon College Tournament

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team will compete in its second tournament in as many weekends with two matches at the Kenyon College Tournament, Friday and Sunday, Sept. 16 and 18, at Mavec Field in Gambier, Ohio. The Student Princes face host Kenyon on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and take on The College of Wooster at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Heidelberg enters the tournament 1-2-1 overall and will play its first true road match of 2011 against Kenyon. ‘Berg played Allegheny (Pa.) College and Saint Vincent (Pa.) College in neutral site matches at last weekend’s Wilmington Kiwanis Classic.

Senior defender Joe Trejo (Tucson, Az./Sabino), senior midfielder Michael Juart (Hilliard/Darby) and junior midfielder Trevor Dawson (Keller, Texas/Keller) led the way for Heidelberg against Allegheny and Saint Vincent, earning Wilmington Kiwanis Classic all-tournament team honors.

Through four matches this season, the Student Princes are led by senior first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Mike Harling (Manchester, England/Holy Cross), freshman midfielder Hamid Shariff (Centennial) and Trejo—all of whom have scored goals—and sophomore defender Erik Furst (Columbus/Upper Arlington), who has notched two assists.

Junior two-time All-OAC goaltender Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) has seen all the action between the pipes for Heidelberg and has made 15 saves while allowing just 0.91 goals per game. He also has one shutout to his credit.

Kenyon also enters the tournament 1-2-1 overall and is led by Logan Konkol and Alistair Flynn with a goal each, and James Smith, who has made 14 saves and allowed four goals this season.

Wooster is 2-2 and is led by Noah Wagemann with three goals and one assist. Taylor Takacs has made 25 stops and allowed 10 goals in the net.

Following the Kenyon Tournament, the men’s soccer team will open a three-match home stand beginning Wednesday, Sept. 21 against Oberlin at 7 p.m.
