GAMBIER, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team defeated Kenyon College, 2-1, tonight in the first of two matches at the Kenyon College Tournament in Gambier, Ohio. Freshman midfielder Nicholas Samaniego’s (Huron) first career goal and an own goal by Kenyon proved the difference.
The Berg improves to 2-2-1, while Kenyon falls previously 2-3-1.
The Student Princes wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead, as Samaniego scored an unassisted goal in the fourth minute.
A 22nd-minute mishap by the Lords extended the Berg’s lead to 2-0.
Nate Petrou got Kenyon on the board with a 56th-minute goal, but strong defensive play by the Student Princes limited Kenyon’s scoring to preserve the win.
Junior two-time All-OAC goaltender Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) logged all 90 minutes in the net and made two saves, upping his season total to 17.
Heidelberg will close the tournament Sunday when it faces The College of Wooster—1-0 winners against Marietta College tonight—at Mavec Field at 1 p.m. Live stats for that game will be available at the following link: http://livestats.kenyon.edu/soccer/xlive.htm.
