TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team will look to get back on the winning track as it hosts Denison University in its final non-conference match of the 2011 season Wednesday at Mayer Field in Tiffin, Ohio. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. The contest will be the fifth home game for the Student Princes this season, and third at Mayer Field.
The Berg enters the contest 2-4-2 overall looking to snap a two-game losing slide. The Student Prince offense features a balanced attack, with six different student-athletes scoring goals in just eight games this season, including freshman midfielder Larry Baxter (Ashland), who scored his first career goal last Saturday against Case Western Reserve University.
Freshman midfielders Hamid Sheriff (Centennial) and Nicholas Samaniego (Huron) lead the team with three points on one goal and one assist each.
Junior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference goalkeeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) will handle the keeper duties. Smith has played all 775 minutes in goal this season, has made 30 saves and allowed just 1.74 goals per 90 minutes.
Denison comes to Tiffin sporting a 5-2-1 record. The Big Red is led by Preston Wagner and Chris Olson with three goals each. Matt Wagner will defend the goal, having made 29 saves and allowed just eight goals over 730 minutes of action.
Following Wednesday’s match, Heidelberg will begin October with an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Capital University on Saturday, Oct. 1.
