TIFFIN, Ohio—Freshman midfielder Hamid Sheriff (Centennial) scored his team-leading second goal of the season tonight as the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team tied Denison University tonight, 1-1, in a non-conference match at Mayer Field in Tiffin, Ohio. The tie was the Berg’s second in the last four games.
With the tie, the Student Princes snapped a two-game losing slide and are now 2-4-3 overall. Denison is 5-2-2.
Denison took an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Ryan Torgersen scored an unassisted goal.
Sheriff provided the equalizer in the 33rd minute to preserve the tie. Sophomore midfielder Christian Walter (Bay Village) was credited with the assist, his first of the season.
Heidelberg controlled the offensive tempo in the second half, outshooting the Big Red, 6-2. Despite being outshot in overtime, 2-0, ‘Berg’s defense refused to give Denison a clean look at the net.
Junior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference goalkeeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) made three saves while playing all 110 minutes. For the season, Smith owns 33 saves while allowing just 16 goals in 885 minutes of action.
