Heidelberg Men's Soccer Team Loses to Otterbein, 1-0, in Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team played its Ohio Athletic Conference home opener today, but lost to Otterbein University, 1-0, at Hidden Valley in Tiffin, Ohio.

The victory improves the Cardinals to 3-5-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the OAC. The Student Princes fall to 2-5-4 overall and 0-1-1 in the OAC.

Kurt Gallant gave Otterbein a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when he scored on a cross from Adam Brown from just to the left of the box. The goal was his fourth of the season.

Three Student-Princes penetrated the Cardinal defense for at least three shots. Sophomore midfielder Christian Walter (Bay Village/Bay) had five looks at the net, while freshman midfielders Nicholas Samaniego (Huron) and Tyler Eoff (Oak Harbor) with three shots each.

The Heidelberg offensive attack was more active in the second half, firing nine shots compared to three in the first period.

In goal, junior two-time All-OAC keeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) made five saves.

Despite the loss, the Berg held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
