2007 Men's Soccer Preview
The 2007 Heidelberg College men’s soccer team’s depth of experienced players and the new recruited quality will be a factor in the Student Princes push to reign among the top half of the Ohio Athletic Conference. Under veteran head coach Brian Haley, Heidelberg has put together a winning season on 12 occasions, including eight-consecutive from 1998-2005. To help guide the way will be 13 letter winners, all of which saw significant action a year ago, and a strong core of 12 newcomers that are all capable of seeing playing time right away.
Leading the list of returners in 2007 is sophomore goalkeeper Jared Kealy. Kealy joined Heidelberg a year ago and was slated to start in goal, but was sidelined with an injury.
Providing a solid look on defense will be sophomores Kyle Anderson, Greg Ortiz-Timpson and Casey Numetko, along with junior Adam Schockman. In addition two freshmen coming onto the squad, Mike Harling and Joe Trejo, are natural defenders who will push the upperclassmen. The depth and quality that will be offered by the defense will be much improved from 2006 and the foundation from which the team will be built.
In midfield there are numerous choices with great experience, which is highlighted by juniors Raul Mendez and Brian Juart and senior Craig Watkinson. Juniors Robbie Marks, Billy Banks and Brad Howell will all be vying for starting spots and give great depth to the team.
Returning in attack will be sophomore Mike Slauter and junior Logan Camin. Slauter and Camin saw limited time a year ago due to a senior laden team, but will be looked at to be a force to be reckoned with this year.
The incoming freshmen are looked at to push the returning team members and all have opportunities to start in the midfield. Many are regarded as natural forwards and goal scorers that will push the upperclassmen players all the way.
