'Berg Tops the Scots for First Win of the Season

The Heidelberg College men’s soccer team, led by head coach Brian Haley, defeated the College of Wooster 3-2 for its first win of the season, bringing the Berg’s overall record to 1-1.

Heidelberg came out of the gates strong against the Scots and took an early 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes of the game. The Berg’s first goal of the contest was assisted in the net by a Wooster defender, but was set up by Heidelberg’s strong movement down the left side of the field and a cross that caught a Wooster defender that was turned, eventually forcing the ball into the net. The second goal of the game was the product of two freshmen, Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) who combined with Charlie Sales (Tucson Az. / Sabino).

Heidelberg was forced to make some changes on defense in the second half which shifted the game’s momentum in favor of the Scots, which allowed the game to become tied at 2-2 following two balls that were in the penalty area and were not settled by Heidelberg.

Robbie Marks (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth) responded by stealing in on the back post after a shot by Owen Botting (Billingsburst, England / The Weald School) was parried out and Marks completed the score for the winning goal.

“As a whole, the team knew that they wanted to bounce back from its setback on Friday,” stated Haley. “Wooster is predominately a strong soccer power in the region and we had to play. We focused on winning the first ball, more importantly the second ball, and once we managed to do this and get the ball into wider positions we found some good attacking options that allowed us to provide a way to score. Overall, this was a good team perforce and hopefully will be looked at as a springboard for better things to come."

Next up the Berg travels to face the Tri-State University Thunder Sept. 8 at 5:00 p.m. in Angola, Ind.
