Balanced Attack Leads to 'Berg Shutout
A balanced attack by the Heidelberg College men’s soccer team led to a 6-0 shutout of Siena Heights University today at Mayer Field on the campus of Heidelberg. Five different ’Berg players found the back of the net led by two goals from Brad Howell (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) to help improve Heidelberg’s overall record to 3-4.
“Today’s game showed what great potential we posses across the board,” stated 19th-year head coach Brian Haley. “We strive to play top-level competition and build on each game to help us continually grow into a highly competitive program.”
Heidelberg took control of the contest early on, netting three goals in the first half. Billy Banks (Hampton, Pa. / Hampton) broke a scoreless tie in the 29th minute when he connected on a pass across the field to freshman Charlie Sales (Tucson, Ariz. / Sabino). Logan Camin (Beachwood, Ohio / Beachwood) worked alongside Brian Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) to avoid a defender and score on a missed save on Siena Heights goalkeeper in the 36th minute to continue Heidelberg’s dominate first half.
The Heidelberg first half lead was extended to three goals after freshman Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) received a pass from Raul Mendez (Mexico City, Mexico / Green Hills) and evaded the goalie to score his first collegiate goal.
In the second half, Heidelberg continued to put pressure on Siena Heights, limiting the visitors to just five total shots. Howell scored off a free kick in the 57th minute, while Casey Numetko (Tucson, Ariz. / Sabino) picked up his first goal of the season on a headed ball courtesy of a free kick from Mendez in the 60th minute. Heidelberg concluded its scoring on a hard shot at midfield from Howell that sailed into the right side of the net near the post in the 72nd minute.
For the game, Heidelberg out shot Siena Heights 27-11. Jared Kealy (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) picked up the win in goal for the Berg, playing the entire contest and finishing with two saves.
Heidelberg returns to action on Sept. 22 when its hosts nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University at Mayer Field. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
