ONU Triumphs Over 'Berg in Overtime
Heidelberg College’s sophomore goalkeeper Jared Kealy (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) already had 12 saves on the day, but just could not reach far enough to snag number 13 as Ohio Northern University’s Nick Farmwald punted one into the lower left-hand side of the box in the 96th minute. His goal gave the reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Champion Polar Bears the win over Heidelberg’s men’s soccer team by a score of 2-1 in overtime.
After a scoreless first half, ’Berg freshman Owen Botting (Billingshurst, England / The Weald School) made the first goal of the day off a free kick in the 60th minute. The Berg held the lead for the next seven minutes, until ONU’s Adam Ross slipped one by Heidelberg defenders into the lower center portion of the box off an assist from Chaz McCullah.
The regulation play ended with the OAC foes tied 1-1. At the start of overtime play, both teams missed opportunities to end the game, that is until Farmwald snuck his shot into the net. Heidelberg falls to 5-6 overall, 1-1 in the OAC, while ONU rises to 9-4 overall, 1-1 in the OAC.
Seniors Raul Mendez (Mexico City, Mexico / Green Hills) and Craig Watkinson (Rotherham Yorkshire, England / Thomas Danby) led Heidelberg for the day with three and two shots on goal respectively.
Heidelberg returns to action Saturday, Oct. 6 to face off against OAC opponent Wilmington College at Wilmington. Play begins at 7:00p.m.
"I thought we did enough today certainly not to lose- we played a much better second half against a committed and physical ONU team. In the end it could have gone either way and today was not just our day. However, if we are going to achieve what we expect this year we need to make those close games go our way. We will look to get ready for Saturday and our next game from this disappointment," commented head coach Brian Haley
