Harling Leads the Way as Heidelberg Tops Wilmington
Freshman Mike Harling (Rochdale, England / Holy Cross) beat out Wilmington College’s goalie twice at the net to give the Heidelberg College men’s soccer team a 2-1 win. The victory brings Heidelberg’s record up to 6-6 overall, 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Harling scored first in the 15th minute of play as he beat the goalie near the post off a long serve from fellow freshman Owen Botting (Billingsburst, England / The Weald School). While his next goal came in the 31st minute after he received a pass from yet another freshman, Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick), and beat out the goalie once again to place the ball in the net by the far post.
Wilmington’s lone goal came seven minutes later as a Heidelberg defender accidentally deflected the ball into the net.
Following the contest head coach Brian Haley praised the total team effort that contributed to the league victory. "All the credit for the win goes to a solid team performance in what is not always an easy place to play. We expected Wilmington to come flying at us but in reality we dominated the first 30 minutes with our passing and movement that put two goals on the board. We were a little disappointed in the way we conceded the 'Own' Goal just before half time that breathed new life into Wilmington."
Defending the net for the whole game for the Berg was sophomore Jared Kealy (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome), who posted four saves on the day.
"Credit goes to Wilmington in the second half,"stated Haley. "They had nothing to lose and threw everything at us - the defense played solid and as Wilmington pushed forward we created several one on one opportunities with their goalkeeper to actually put a few more goals in. We enjoyed the win and now we get ready for the next one."
The men play again at home Wednesday, Oct. 10 against OAC opponent Baldwin-Wallace, game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
