Heidelberg in Four-Way Tie for First in OAC
With a 3-1 victory over Baldwin-Wallace, the Heidelberg College men’s soccer team, coached by Brian Haley, placed itself back in the running for the Ohio Athletic Conference crown. Currently four teams are tied at the top of the OAC with a conference record of 3-1, they include Heidelberg, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College, and John Carroll University. Heidelberg’s record currently stands at 7-6 overall.
It was a rainy, windy game, but the Berg persevered and dominated the opposing Yellow Jackets for the win. B-W scored the first goal in the 18th minute when Todd Alexander headed the ball into the center of the box off a corner kick by Bryce Sylvester, but the Student Princes would not let this set back deter them in their quest for victory.
15 minutes later, Billy Banks (Hampton, Pa. / Hampton) scored the game-tying goal for the Berg off a deflection from a B-W defender. In the 42nd minute, Brian Juart (Hillard, Ohio / Hillard Darby) punted in the game-winning goal from 25 yards out off a pass from Charlie Sales (Tucson, Ariz. / Sabino).
Sales and Juart tag-teamed once more in the 85th minute for the team’s final goal of the day. This time it was Sales who placed the ball in the bottom right of the goal after receiving a pass from Juart.
Mike Harling (Rochdale, England / Holy Cross) stepped up for his first stint ever as goalkeeper for the Berg. He recorded two saves in his debut and only allowed one goal.
Heidelberg returns to action Saturday, Oct. 13 at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio as they face the Capital University Crusaders. Kick off is at 3:30 p.m.
