'Berg Falls in Season Opener

The Heidelberg men’s soccer team came out strong but just could not muster up enough goals to secure a win in its season opener against Oberlin College at the Oberlin Tournament. The Berg lost 3-1 to the Yeomen.

Brian Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) came out strong for the Berg, scoring the first goal of the game unassisted at 10:38 off a corner kick. Oberlin did not answer back with a goal until the second half when Skyler Dum scored his first goal of the game in the 51st minute off a pass to the middle from Oliver Farrell that Dum dribbled and shot into the back of the net.

18 minutes later Evan Atwell netted the game-winning shot for the Yeomen when he received a cross to the middle from Dan Jaffe, which he headed in for a goal. Dum topped the game off in the 80th minute with his second and the game’s final goal. Jaffe sailed a long pass over the defense to his teammate, placing another point on the scoreboard.

Juart led the offensive push for the Berg by scoring the lone team goal  and taking four shots, two of which were on goal. Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) also took two shots on goal, while Raul Mendez (Mexico City, Mexico / Green Hills) and Billy Banks (Hampton, Pa. / Hampton) each contributed a shot on goal as well. Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) grabbed five saves while guarding the net for the Berg.

Heidelberg suits up again on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. to face off against the College of Wooster during the second round of the Oberlin Tournament.
