Student Princes Top the Scots for First Win
A four minute span in the first half was all the Heidelberg men’s soccer team needed to score three goals and secure a 3-1 win over the College of Wooster at the Oberlin College Tournament. The Berg improves to 1-1 on the year.
Wooster took the lead early on when Karl Ruter netted the first goal of the game for the Scots in the ninth minute of play off a deep pass to the far side from Nick Waychoff. Heidelberg answered back 22 minutes later when Brian Juart (Hillard, Ohio / Hillard Darby) received a cross from Billy Banks (Hampton, Pa. / Hampton) which he headed into the net for his second goal of the season.
Just over two minutes later Dillard Anu scored his first collegiate goal unassisted off a rebound from a shot by Raul Mendez (Mexico City, Mexico / Green Hills) in front of the net which he followed in for the point. Mendez redeemed himself in the about a minute and a half later with a goal of his own. Off a cross from Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick), Mendez booted a shot into the lower right half of the net to put the Berg up 3-1 on the scoreboard.
In the second half, the Student Princes and the Scots both posted four shots but were unable to capitalize upon them as Heidelberg’s Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) and Wooster’s Taylor Takacs showed great poise guarding the goals for their respective teams.
Offensively for the Berg, Mendez led the team with five shots, three on goal, while Juart recorded three shots, two of which were on goal. Benson protected the net the entire contest for the Berg and racked up three saves.
Ruter and Waychoff both shot three times, twice on goal for each Scot. While Takacs moved into the goalie position in the second half, Patryk Tenorio commanded the net for Wooster during the first half. He saved five shots, but allowed three goals for the loss.
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday, September 6, down south at the Greensboro College Tournament where the team will face off against the hosting Pride at 2:30 p.m.
