Heidelberg Loses to Greensboro

Despite the best efforts of goalie Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay), the Heidelberg men’s soccer team lost to Greensboro College 3-0 in the first round of play in the tournament hosted by the Pride. Heidelberg now stands at 1-2 on the year.

Benson snatched 10 saves on the day, eight in just the first half, unfortunately three balls managed to find their way to the back of the Berg’s goal. Ben Norman scored the first goal for the Pride. It came in the 20th minute of play in the first half after Norman received a cross from Fredrik Edeland. Norman went onto score again in the second during the 55th minute when he was able to maneuver around Benson for the unassisted goal.

Deng Abiel topped things off for Greensboro when he booted one in off a corner kick by Norman in the 76th minute. All in all, Norman led his team with two goals, an assists, and three shots, all of which were on goal. Kurt Gardiner guarded the net for the Pride and grabbed all five shots on goal that came his way for the shutout.

For the Berg, Prince Sinkinah (Columbus, Ohio / Northland) tallied a team-high three shots, two of which were on goal. Jakob Reinbolt (Whitehouse, Ohio / Anthony Wayne), Billy Banks (Hampton, Pa. / Hampton), and Brian Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) all also recorded a shot on goal.

Heidelberg suits up again in North Carolina to face off against North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday, September 7, at 12 p.m. in the final round of play at the Greensboro College Tournament.
