Heidelberg Falls to Colonels 2-1
Heidelberg fought a hard battle, but the team was not able to hold on. In the last five minutes of play, the Colonels of Centre College were able to stride by the Student Princes and clinch the win at 2-1. Heidelberg College falls to 1-4-1 on the season while Centre College improves to 5-1.
Heidelberg was the first team to get on the board in the match. 38 minutes into the first half, sophomore Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) received a perfectly played cross from Mike Harling (Rochdale, England / Holy Cross) and headed the ball into the back of the net. The Student Princes held the lead going into halftime.
In the second half, both teams came out aggressive and determined to win. Just over a minute into the second half, a foul was called on Heidelberg in the box and a penalty kick was to be taken. Heidelberg’s Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) was not able to save the shot by Centre’s Adam Boyer in the right corner and the Colonels tied the game 1-1.
Centre would go on to score their final goal with just five minutes to go in the competition. Austin Hall of Centre dribbled up the middle and shot right by Heidelberg to secure the win. Craig Watkinson (Rotherham Yorkshire, England /Thomas Danby) led Heidelberg offensively with three shots on goal while Benson grabbed 11 saves in the game.
Heidelberg travels to Pennsylvania on Wednesday, September 17 to take on the Alleghany College Gators at 7:30 p.m.
