Student Princes Put Up a Tough Fight Against Spartans

The Case Western Reserve University Spartans grabbed hold of the lead in the first half and refused to let go as they defeated the Heidelberg men’s soccer team 4-0 in a non-conference match-up. The Spartans, who started the season ranked 22nd in the nation, raise their record to 5-2, while the Berg currently stands at 2-5-1.

Score aside, 'Berg head coach Brian Haley was pleased with the efforts of his team. "The score is a little lopsided given the game Heidelberg played tonight. It was a very even game except for the last seven minutes when we pushed on and tried to tie the game which led to some late goals [by Case]," He commented, "However, there were lots of positives to take from the game especially from some of the first year players who stood in for some of the injured players this evening. We will look to rebound back in our next match."

The game was scoreless until the 36th minute when Case’s Jordan Fox had a deep throw in that RJ French was able to collect and pass to Vinny Bell, who then headed in a goal.

Case took their 1-0 lead deep into the second half until the team scored three straight goals over a four minute span. RJ French and Kyle Bednar both scored unassisted goals, and Vinny Bell kicked in his second of the game to put the Spartans up 4-0 and seal the win.

Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) led the Heidelberg offense with six shots, three of which were on goal. Brian Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) contributed five shots, three on goal also, while Logan Camin (Beachwood, Ohio / Beachwood) recorded two shots, both on goal, and Raul Mendez (Mexico City, Mexico / Green Hills) posted a shot as well.

Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) picked up two saves while guarding the net the entire game for the Berg.

Heidelberg returns to action on Wednesday, September 24, at home against Defiance College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
