Heidelberg Defeats Defiance 3-0

The Heidelberg College men’s soccer team refused to let the Defiance Yellow Jackets score, winning the match 3-0. Heidelberg improves their record to 3-5-1 while Defiance drops to 0-7.

Just after 10 minutes passed in the first half, Heidelberg’s Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) nailed a shot into the upper 90. Defiance goalie Mitch Livensparger was not able to make the save, giving Buhrman his third goal of the year.

The Student Princes kept up the pace and did not waste any time. Two minutes after their first goal, Mike Harling (Rochdale, England / Holy Cross) received a perfectly played ball from freshman Michael Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) on the six-yard line and scored Heidelberg’s second goal of the half. Harling now has two goals this season.

Brian Juart took the free kick for Heidelberg at the 59th minute mark. After the ball was fumbled in the box, Heidelberg senior Raul Mendez (Mexico City, Mexico / Green Hills) got a hold of it and scored the team’s third and final goal of the match.

With just minutes to go, Livensparger managed to make an outstanding save to keep Buhrman from scoring his second goal of the night. Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) did an excellent job in the goal for Heidelberg and picked up his first shutout of the year.

Heidelberg returns to the field on Tuesday, September 30, at home against Ohio Dominican at 7:00 p.m.
