Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Tie at Marietta
The Heidelberg College men’s soccer team battled Marietta College, who is currently ranked ninth regionally according to the NSCAA/Adidas poll, to a 1-1 tie in double overtime at Marietta Field in Marietta, Ohio.
Today’s game marked the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams as the Berg now stands at 3-6-2 overall, while Marietta is 5-2-3.
Both goals were scored within the first 12 minutes of the match. Marietta’s Deric McDonald connected off a corner kick from Jack Dunn at the 9:22 mark to put the Pioneers on top 1-0.
At the 11:57 mark Heidelberg responded when midfielder Brian Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) hit a shot on the ground from 20-yards out that caromed off the far post to even the score at 1-1. Joining in on Juart’s goal was Raul Mendez (Mexico City, Mexico / Green Hills).
Marietta held a 29-16 advantage in shots on the day, along with a slim 10-6 lead in shots on goal. Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) played the entire 110:00 minutes between the pipes and picked up nine saves for the Berg.
Heidelberg continues its trek through the OAC when it entertains Baldwin-Wallace College under the lights at Mayer Field on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
