Heidelberg Falls in Overtime
It took until the 91:02 minute mark for a shot to hit the back of a goal and, unfortunately for the Heidelberg men’s soccer team, that shot was kicked by John Carroll University’s Jeff Kosek. The Blue Streaks’ overtime victory places them in a four-way tie for first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a record of 3-1, 7-4-1 overall. Heidelberg sits in a two-way tie with Marietta College just underneath the top of the crop, holding a record of 2-1-1 in conference play, 5-7-2 on the year.
It was a fairly even-played contest, with John Carroll edging out the Berg 13-12 in shots, but 10-4 in shots on goal. Shane Nardellio (Coventry, England / Bishop Ullathorne) led the Student Princes with two shots, both on goal, while Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) and Craig Watkinson (Rotherham Yorkshire, England / Thomas Danby) also contributed a shot on goal each.
For John Carroll, Kosek and Scott McKinney racked up four shots apiece. Kosek landed three on goal, while McKinney notched two. Dave Hickey also recorded two shots, both on goal, for the Blue Streaks.
Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) snatched up nine saves for Heidelberg, bringing his season total to 79. Matt DeMarchi grabbed four saves for JCU during the game.
Heidelberg returns to action at home on Saturday, October 18. The Berg will face-off against Otterbein College at 7 p.m. on Mayer Field.
