Heidelberg Closes Out Regular Season on a High Note

A total team effort in the second half led to a 3-2 men’s soccer victory for Heidelberg College over Mount Union College in Ohio Athletic Conference action. Three different players scored in the win to help the Berg close out its 2008 regular season slate on a high note and improve its overall record to 7-10-2 and its league mark to 4-4-1. Mount Union concludes its season at 6-12-1 and 1-8.
 
Heidelberg’s win secured a top-tier finish in the league standings for the second-straight season, and the third time in the last four years, all of which have been under the guidance of head coach Brian Haley.
 
After a scoreless first half Mount Union’s T.J. Welch found the back of the net in the 53rd minute. The Berg responded roughly 10 minutes later when sophomore forward Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) took a through ball and beat Mount Union’s goalie for the game-tying score in the 63rd minute.
 
Brian Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) wasted little time getting in the action with Buhrman as he scored on a free kick from 25 yards out in the 64th minute to give Heidelberg its first lead of the game, 2-1. Juart’s goal was his sixth on the season, which is tops on the team.
 
Heidelberg continued to dominant on the offensive end, scoring its third-straight goal in the game in the 71st minute. Craig Watkinson (Rotherham Yorkshire, England / Thomas Danby) scored the eventual game-winning goal on a penalty kick.
 
For the contest, Heidelberg held a 19-12 advantage in shots, but the Purple Raiders recorded 10 corner kicks compared to five by the Berg. In goal Heidelberg’s Brian Benson (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) played the entire contest between the pipes and picked up six saves.
