Heidelberg Brings Home Five OAC Championships From Berea
Led by Most Outstanding Sprint Athlete Cory Beebe (Medina, Ohio / Cloverleaf) and three-time individual champion Greg Tyson, Jr. (Lima, Ohio / Lima Senior) the Heidelberg College men’s track and field team finished third at the 2007 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College May 11-12 in Berea, Ohio.
Mount Union College compiled 198.50 points to win the OAC Team Championship followed by Ohio Northern University with 150 points. Heidelberg recorded 133 points followed by Otterbein College (62) and Capital University (57).
En route to his second-straight Most Outstanding Sprint Athlete honor Beebe won the 400-meter hurdles in 53.33, while standing second in the 400-meter dash (49.85) and third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.14). It was the second-consecutive year that Beebe won the 400-meter hurdles and claimed all-conference honors in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles, as well as the 400-meter dash.
Tyson, Jr. won OAC Championships in the 400-meter dash (48.88), long jump (24’3.5”) and the triple jump (44’9.75”), as well as earning a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash (21.78). For his efforts, Tyson, Jr. earned all-conference honors in all four events. It was the second-consecutive season that he has won the triple jump and has received all-league accolades for the last three-straight seasons in the long jump and triple jump, while taking home two All-OAC honors in the 400-meter dash. On Friday, in his 200-meter preliminary race, Tyson, Jr. ran in a NCAA provisional time of 21.66.
Rounding out Heidelberg’s list of champions is its 4x400-meter relay team of Julius Salgado (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont Ross), Justin Zuchowski (Brunswick, Oho / Brunswick), Justin Shields (Lorain, Oho / Amherst L. Steele) and Beebe. The group crossed the finish line in 3:18.67, earning All-OAC honors in the process.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Julius Higginbotham (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria), Paris Hilliard (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King), Steven Malone (Shaker Heights, Ohio / Shaker Heights) and Shields claimed all-league honors with a runner-up finish in 42.30, which followed Heidelberg’s 4x800-meter relay teams runner-up finish in a new school record of 7:39.90 on Friday. The 4x800-meter relay team consisted of Mark Childs (New Albany, Oho / New Albany), Reed Wolverton (Van Wert, Oho / Van Wert), Zac Sendelbach (New London, Ohio / New London) and Scott Lasch (Huron, Oho /Huron).
Rounding out Heidelberg’s list of all-conference performers, with third place finishes, was Lasch in the 1,500-meter run (4:00.66), Childs in the high jump (6’1.5”) and Higginbotham in the long jump (22’6.35).
