Men's Track & Field Takes Third at All-Ohio; Sprinters Fare Well for Women
The Heidelberg College men’s and women’s track and field teams took part in the annual All-Ohio Championships today hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. The men’s team finished third, while the women took 13th. Together the teams brought home 16 All-Ohio honors and four championships.
On the men’s side, Heidelberg racked up 97.50 points to place just behind champion Ohio Wesleyan University at 103.50 and Mount Union College with 100. Rounding out the top-five was Ohio Northern University with 94 points and Baldwin-Wallace College with 54 points.
Leading the way for Heidelberg on the men’s side was the 4x100-meter relay team of Tyson Brown (Van Wert, Ohio / Van Wert), Paris Hilliard (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King), Wes Hendricks (Beavercreek, Ohio / Beavercreek) and Julius Higginbotham (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria). The relay took home the championship and All-Ohio honors in a NCAA Division III provisionally-qualifying mark of 41.85.
Also bringing home a championship and subsequent All-Ohio honor was Scott Lasch (Huron, Ohio / Huron) in the 1,500-meter run (4:00.17), Hendricks in the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.79 and Hilliard in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 22.56.
Picking up two individual All-Ohio honors on the day was Higginbotham with a second in the long jump (22’5”) and a third in the 100-meter dash (10.98). Backing Higginbotham with multiple individual All-Ohio honors was Hendricks with a second in the 200-meter dash.
Rounding out the list of All-Ohio runners was Mark Childs (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) with a second in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:55.19 and the 4x400-meter relay team of Childs, Terrence Horton (Pickerington, Ohio / Pickerington), Justin Zuchowski (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) and Hendricks. The relay tem finished in a time of 3:22.93.
On the women’s side, Heidelberg took home runner-up honors in the 4x100-meter relay with the team of Angela Zellner (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg), Alexis Goodman (Tiffin, Ohio / Columbian), Catie Evers (Burkettsville, Ohio / St. Henry) and Colleen Nitchman (Wakeman, Ohio / Western Reserve). The quartet finished in a time of 49.77 and earned All-Ohio accolades in the process.
Picking up another All-Ohio honor was Nitchman in the 100-meter dash. She raced to a third place finish in 12.62. Nitchman also took home a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (26.59).
Evers took to the track in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, taking home a sixth (26.81) and an eighth (1:01.33), respectively.
Rounding out the top-10 finishers for Heidelberg was Goodman in the 200-meter dash. Goodman crossed the finish line in a time of 27.63, good enough for 10th place.
Heidelberg will return to the track at the Wilmington Invitational on April 19th.
