Newcomers have Impressive Showing in First Outing

The Heidelberg College track and field team traveled west to open its 2007-08 indoor season at the Oiler Open hosted by the University of Findlay. The unscored meet featured a wealth of youth for Heidelberg in both the men’s and women’s events.

Sophomore Judy Bataille (Felicity, Ohio / Felicity-Franklin), a newcomer to the women’s track and field team, has provisionally qualified for the 2008 Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 55-meter dash in just her first outing in the Tricolor. Bataille ran the 55-meter dash in 7.25 at the Oiler Open. Bataille’s mark also set a new Heidelberg record, surpassing the 1990 record of 7.3 set by Becky Banhagel.

Bringing home a third place finish in the 300-meter dash was freshman Catie Evers (Burkettsville, Ohio / Saint Henry) in a time of 42.39.

Highlighting that day on the men’s side was a first-place finish by Cory Beebe (Medina, Ohio / Cloverleaf) in the 300-meter dash (35.2), to go along with a third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.42)

Finishing third on the day were freshmen Wes Hendricks (Beavercreek, Ohio / Beavercreek) in the 300-meter dash (35.9) and fellow classmate Adam Bumb (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) in the triple jump (39’0.25”), while sophomores Paris Hilliard (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King) and Mark Childs (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) were third in the 200-meter dash (23.24) and the 800-meter run (1:56.70), respectively.

Rounding out the top-five finishes for the Berg was sophomore Justin Shields (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst L. Steel) with a fourth in the 300-meter dash (36.28), freshman Tyson Brown (Van Wert, Ohio / Van Wert) with a fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.21) and Jordan Alvarez (Sherwood, Ohio / Fairview) was fifth in the high jump with a jump of 5’8”.
