'Berg Track and Field Competes in First Event of the New Year at Findlay

After over a month away from competition, the Heidelberg University track and field team returned to the track at the Northwest Ohio Meet, hosted by the University of Findlay.

Senior Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway), an All-American a year ago, was the top performer for The Berg in Findlay. Bevington clocked a 9.46 in the 60-meter hurdles, earning a third place finish.

Marian followed her third place finish in the 60-meters hurdles with a fourth place finish in the long jump. She leaped 16-3.25, and did not record one foul in her five attempts.

Sophomore Samantha Filliater (Fostoria/Lakota) placed fourth in the women’s 60-meter dash, finishing with a time of 8.74.

In the 3000-meter final, junior Sophie Goobic (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) was the only Student Princes to compete. Goobic earned a fourth place finish for the Berg clocking a time of 10:58.04, a personal record.

Freshman thrower, Mary Beth Boyden re-broke the Heidelberg women’s weight throw record that she broke back in November 2012 with a toss of 46-5.25. Boyden followed her record-breaking performance in the weight throw with a heave of 40-3.25 in the shot put.

Respectively, Boyden finished third and fourth in the shot put and weight throw.

In the weight throw, senior Brittany Tatum (Cleveland/Trinity) and sophomore Sam Auchmuty (Cygnet/Elmwood) tossed 39-00.25 and 37-7.75 finishing in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

On the men’s side, sophomore sprinter Donteea Dye (Fairfield) lead the Berg with a third place finish in the 60-meter dash finals. Dye finished second overall in the preliminaries earning a spot in the final heat.

Francisque Pierre-Jerome of OAC foe Ohio Northern and Kendall Stevens, who ran unattached, bested Dye’s time of 7.07 in the finals.

In the 200-meter dash, sophomore Austin Bentz (Tiffin/Columbian) and senior Larry Massey (Royal Oak, MI/Wylie E. Groves) finished fifth and sixth.

The duo clocked 23.90 and 23.98.

Freshmen Jacob Berryman (Fremont/Ross) and Avery Gatchell (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon) grabbed two top-five finishes for the Berg in the 400-meter dash, finishing second and fourth. Berryman clocked a time of 53.03, while Gatchell finished with a time of 53.69.

Sophomore Hank Bevington (Celina/Parkway) earned a second place finish in the 60-meter hurdles for the Student Princes with a time of 8.94.

In the 400-meter relay, four freshmen shined bright for the Berg, earning a fourth place finish. The quartet of Berryman, Cecil Fitch, Collin Fischer and Michael Yoder, clocked a time of 3:38.17, besting the Heidelberg ‘B’ squad by four seconds.

Heidelberg’s ‘B’ team consisting of freshman Gatchell, junior Jamil Boldian (Chicago, IL./Urban Prep), sophomore Tyler Eoff (Oak Harbor) and freshman Grant Bass placed fifth, finishing with a time of 3:42.66.

The Heidelberg track and field squad will return to action on Saturday, January 26, 2013 when they travel to Alliance, Ohio to compete in the North Split Meet.
