'Berg Provisionally Qualifies in Five Events

Naperville, Ill. – May 15, 2010 – The Heidelberg University men’s track and field team had an impressive outing at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College May 13-14. The Berg had three individuals, and two relays, record provisional qualifying marks for the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In the javelin, Joshua Bowmar (Marengo, Ohio / Highland) took home runner-up honors at the meet with a throw of 193’00. His mark was a provisional qualifying throw as well as topped his own school record of 184’11. It is the first time that Bowmar has landed a spot on the national list.

Also a newcomer to the national list is Mark Childs (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) and Jamie Kuess (Coldwater, Ohio / Coldwater). Childs provisionally qualified in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.23. Kuess has come on strong this season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and it paid off yesterday with a provisional time of 9:14.09.

Heidelberg’s 4x100-meter relay team of Julius Higginbotham (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria), Paris Hilliard (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King), Justin Burnett (Springfield, Ohio / Northwestern) and Gibril Kamara (Westerville, Ohio / Central) improved on its provisional qualifying time. The Berg ranks 10th on the list at 41.75 following its outing at North Central. Heidelberg is looking to return to nationals in the 4x100-meter relay after a two-year hiatus.

The 4x400-meter relay team followed the lead of the 4x100-meter relay team and continued to improve on its provisional qualifying time. The relay consists of Bowmar, Childs, Joe Yoder (West Liberty, Ohio / West Liberty) and Terrence Horton (Pickerington, Ohio / Pickerington). They combined to cross the finish line in 3:15.58, which ranks 13th on the national list. Heidelberg has been represented in the 4x400-meter at nationals in two of the last three years, bringing home All-American honors in 2007.

The NCAA Championships are slated for May 27-29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
