Track & Field Teams Compete in First Day of Grand Valley State Second-to-Last Chance Meet

ALLENDALE, Mich.—The Heidelberg University men’s and women’s track & field teams competed yesterday in the first day of the Grand Valley (Mich.) State Second-to-Last Chance Meet in Allendale, Mich. in hopes of improving their qualifying marks for the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships in two weeks in Claremont, Calif.

Juniors Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) and Josh Lynch (Dayton/Meadowdale) highlighted men’s action in field events. Davis placed second in the high jump with a mark of 6-7.00, while Lynch came in fourth with the triple jump after a leap of 47-3.00.

Junior Wes Hendricks (Beavercreak) placed fifth in the 400-meter dash in 48.90.

The 4-by-100-meter relay team of junior Gibril Kamara (Westerville/Central), Hendricks, freshman Desmond Vaughn (Cortland/Lakeview) and sophomore Cartel Brooks (Kokomo, Ind./Galion) teamed to clock 42.20 and place fourth.

The 4-by-400-meter relay of junior Shondell Thomas (Westerville/South), freshman Julius Salgado (Fremont/Ross), senior Joe Yoder (West Liberty/West Liberty-Salem) and Hendricks ran a 3:19.21 and came in fifth.

In women’s action, senior Jazmine Shaw (Columbus/Hamilton Township) ran the 400-meter dash in 49.66 and placed sixth. Junior Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) claimed sixth place in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.67. She also placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 19-2.75.

Both teams continue action from Allendale this afternoon.
