Four Earn Academic All-OAC At Large Honors

Heidelberg College is represented by four student-athletes on the 2007 Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference At Large Teams. Earning a spot on the men’s at large team was junior 285 pound wrestler Ryan Bowers (Lima, Ohio / Elida) and junior Maxwell Norris (Toledo, Ohio / Springfield) of the men’s tennis team, while sophomore women’s tennis player Amanda Hanning (Galion, Ohio / Galion) earned a spot on the women’s at-large team. Garnering honorable mention accolades on the men’s side was senior golfer Garrett Humes (Delaware, Ohio / Buckeye Valley).

The academic award winners are selected by the OAC faculty representatives. To be eligible for Academic All-OAC, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least his or her second year of participation in the sport.

Bowers was a 2007 unanimous selection after boasting a 3.79 cumulative grade point average in the field of sport management. He was tabbed a 2007 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Academic All-American and was the 285 pound Ohio Athletic Conference runner-up. Bowers also made his first appearance at the national championships, missing All-American honors by one bout. Bowers finished the year at 23-9.

It is Norris’ second selection to the Academic All-OAC Team. He was named to the honorable mention team a season ago. A communication studies major, Norris carries a 3.63 gpa. Norris finished 2007 with an overall record of 11-4 at second singles and recorded a 7-6 mark at first doubles with teammate Paul Evans (Manchester, England / Holy Cross).

Hanning, a communications and sport management major, has a 3.52 gpa. Hanning earned a spot on the 2007 All-OAC Honorable Mention Team. She recorded an 11-4 overall record at second singles in 2007, closing out the 2007 season winning four of her last five matches. Hanning teamed with Tina Dodson (Clyde, Ohio / Clyde) and recorded a 7-6 record at first doubles.

A mathematics major, Humes carries a gpa of 3.60. Humes is a four-year letter winner for Heidelberg on the golf course, earning All-OAC honors in 2005. In 2007 Humes earned five top-20 finishes, while leading the Berg with a 78.8 stroke average.
