'Berg Grapples Polar Bears and Wins
The no. 6 Heidelberg College wrestling team, led by head coach Jason Miller, defeated Ohio Northern University 28-6, giving the Berg its third win of the season in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Polar Bears fall to 4-7 overall, 2-1 in the OAC after the defeat, while the Berg rises to the top of the conference with a 3-0 OAC record, 8-1 overall.
Jerrad Hoxie (Forest Hills, Mich. / Forest Hills) started things off nicely for Heidelberg at 125 by defeating Jason VanAtta from ONU by a technical fall, 16-0. Tony Lawler (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) soon followed at 133 for the Berg, but lost to Jeff Penny by a 7-3 decision. No. 9 Nick Sanchez (Lima, Ohio / Bath) quickly put things back on track for the Student Princes, however, when he pulled off a close 3-2 win over Nick Hoopes in a 141-pound match.
Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry) kept things going at 149 with a 10-5 victory over Jeff Sommers, while no. 2 Joe Pflug (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) did not disappoint at 157 with a 12-6 win over Luke Miller.
With the team score sitting at 14-3 in favor of Heidelberg, Ian Rammel (St. Mary’s, Ohio / Spencerville) took to the mat to face-off against Josh Bordner from ONU at 165. The team score rose up to 17-3 as soon as Rammel’s hand was raised for his 10-4 decision over Bordner. Ben Plowman put the Polar Bears back in it, though, with an 8-1 decision over Matt Findley (Lorain, Ohio / Southview) at the 174 pound weight class.
Ed Bizorik (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) sealed the win for the Student Princes with a 5-0 decision over ONU’s Andrew Swick at 184, bringing the team score up 20-6 in favor of the Berg.
No. 5 Ryan Fogliano (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) and no. 8 Ryan Bowers (Lima, Ohio / Elida) wrapped things up at 197 and heavy-weight for Heidelberg. Fogliano beat Andrew Michel by a technical fall score of 18-2, while Bowers rounded out the night with an 11-6 decision against Joe Fisher.
Heidelberg wrestles next at home against no. 30 John Carroll University, also undefeated in the OAC, on January 22. The match begins at 7:30 p.m.
