Student Princes Succeed at Spartan Classic

A second place finish and 15 placers equaled an excellent outing for the no. 6 Heidelberg College wrestling team this past weekend at the Spartan Mat Classic hosted by Manchester College. Tony Carothers (Bloomingdale, Ohio / Harrison Central), a heavyweight for the Berg, led the team with a first place finish after pinning all four opponents on his way to the top.

Dominic Cribari (Chesterland, Ohio / West Geauga) and Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) placed second for the team at 125 and 157 respectively, while Jake Weisman (Bexley, Ohio / Bexley) and Joe Newland (Urbana, Ohio / St. Paris Graham) came in third at 125 and 149. Placing fourth was 184-pounder Derek Bradley (Roscommon, Mich. / Roscommon).

Heidelberg racked up 125.5 points during the tournament, the most by any team except for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, which had 163. Rounding out the top five was Tri-State with 90 points, Findlay with 77, and Wabash, which gathered 75.

Heidelberg competes next against no. 30 John Carroll University on Tuesday, January 22 at home. Both teams will be fighting for the top seat in the Ohio Athletic Conference in the dual match which is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
