Heidelberg Remains Undefeated in OAC

It was a battle of the Ohio Athletic Conference powerhouses when no. 6 Heidelberg College took on no. 30 John Carroll University under the spotlight in Seiberling Gymnasium on Heidelberg’s campus. Both teams went into the match undefeated and atop the conference standings, but only one emerged the victor. The Berg defeated the Blue Streaks 35-7 for the win, bringing its record up to 9-1 overall, 4-0 in the OAC. John Carroll falls to 6-6 on the season, 2-1 in conference action.

The Student Princes came out on the mat with one thought on their minds, the 20-16 upset they suffered to the Blue Streaks last season that cost them the regular season OAC title. 125-pounder Jerrad Hoxie (Forest Hills, Mich. / Forest Hills) came out strong in the first match of the night versus John Carroll’s Greg Stolfer. Hoxie’s 12-3 major decision over Stolfer showed the whole gym that Heidelberg was there for one reason, to win. Period.

Hoxie was followed in the line-up by fellow Michiganite James Fisher (Bedford, Mich. / Bedford) in the 133 pound weight class. The young freshman held his own against JCU senior Adam Pizzurro well into the third period, but experience triumphed in the end and Pizzurro won the match by a score of 9-6.

No.9 Nick Sanchez (Lima, Ohio / Bath) commanded the 141 pound weight class for Heidelberg. He made quick work of John Carroll’s Matt Narducci, scoring 11 points before finally pinning him 36 seconds into the third period. Sanchez was followed by Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry) at 149. Mizer defeated Greg Elliott in an 11-2 major decision.

No. 2 Joe Pflug (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) entertained the home crowd with a 20-2 technical fall victory over the Blue Streak’s Tyler Mickley at 157, while Aaron Jonhenry (Berea, Ohio / Berea) made it four wins in a row for the Berg when he beat Devon Jurczak 7-3.

At 174, fans saw a face off between Heidelberg’s Matt Findley (Lorain, Ohio / Southview) and John Carroll’s Steven Bagnowski. Findley, a freshman from Lorain, Ohio, proved his abilities when he beat Bagnowski, a senior, 9-4, placing the Berg ahead 25-3.

With a win sealed, Ed Bizorik (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) came to the mat for Heidelberg at 184. Unfortunately, Bizorik could not top Ben Adams, who pulled off an 8-0 major decision for the Blue Streaks.

No. 5 Ryan Fogliano (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) put Heidelberg back on the winning track at 197 with a 10-2 victory, while no. 8 Ryan Bowers (Lima, Ohio / Elida) polished things off for the Student Princes with a 1:20 pin at heavyweight.

Heidelberg wrestles next against no. 8 Ashland University (Div. II) on Jan. 29 at home. Wrestling begins at 7:00 p.m.
