Wrestling Season Fast Approaching

The Tin Gym is full of grapplers again, as practice began for the Heidelberg College wrestling team. Sixth-year head coach and reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Jason Miller will look to claim the team’s third-consecutive OAC Championship in 2007-08.

“Our guys seem very dedicated and focused this year,” Miller stated, “It is the first year I feel we are where we need to be in regards to competition level and depth.”

The Student Princes won the program’s first OAC regular season and tournament championships in 2006 and the tournament title once again in 2007. It seems possible the Berg will do it again, as it returns nine of its 10 OAC placers from a season ago.

In all weight classes, the strong freshmen class will have an impact and will be providing great depth for the team, as a whole, making it one of the biggest programs in the nation.

“The freshmen have really raised the level of intensity at practice,” remarked Miller, “The entire line up, including third and fourth back-ups, are competitive this year.”

Looking for a way to get the student body enthusiastic about the upcoming winter season, the ’Berg Halloween Madness will be held in Seiberling Gymnasium at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31. It is a ’Berg Pride event meant to resemble Midnight Madness events put on by NCAA Division I schools.

The pep rally-style occasion, which is being held to honor all sports at Heidelberg, will feature a dunk contest for members of the men’s basketball team and a shooting contest for all other athletes who attend.

The wrestlers begin their season Tuesday, November 13 at Tri-State University in Angola, Ind. At 7 p.m.
