Heidelberg Remains Perfect in OAC
The 24th ranked Heidelberg wrestling team remained perfect in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 44-3 win at Baldwin-Wallace College tonight, January 13.
The Berg finished the evening winning nine of 10 weight classes, highlighted by two falls, a technical fall and three major decisions. The win improves Heidelberg to 3-0 in the OAC and 6-3 overall, while the Yellow Jackets stand at 0-3 in the league and 2-17 overall.
Heidelberg swept the first six weight classes beginning with a forfeit at 125 pounds. Tony Lawler (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) doubled up Heidelberg’s score with a fall in 4:34 at 133 pounds.
At 141 pounds, Boomer Fechko (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) took control early and cruised to an eventual 16-0 technical fall in 3:40. Josh Levy (West Liberty, Ohio West Liberty Salem) continued the Berg’s winning ways with a 15-3 major decision at 149.
No. 5 Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry) picked up his team-leading 22nd win on the year with a fall in 3:43 at 127 pounds, while Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) is on Mizer’s heels in victories with 21, following a 3-0 decision at 165 pounds. Mizer and Curley have handled all three OAC matches on the year and have unblemished records in those matches.
Baldwin-Wallace took the 174 pound match, but Heidelberg swept the final three weight classes en route to the win. Ed Bizorik (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) posted a 9-1 major decision at 184 to get things going followed by a 17-4 major decision by 197 pounder Brad Rice (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson). Tony Carothers (Bloomingdale, Ohio / Harrison Central) closed out the evening with a pin in 40 seconds at heavyweight.
Heidelberg faces a week off and returns to the mat at Ohio Northern University Jan. 20. Action at ONU is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
