Five Place at Pete Willson Invite
Five placed for the nationally ranked Heidelberg University wrestling team at the Pete Willson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College January 30-31. As a team the Berg stood sixth in the 31-team field.
Leading the way with a runner-up finish was junior 157 pounder Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry). Mizer posted four-straight decisions to get to the championship bout before falling to nationally ranked Jason Brew of Olivet. Mizer extended his team-leading victory count to 28.
Taking home third place honors was 141 pounder Boomer Fechko (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) and heavyweight Tony Carothers (Bloomingdale, Ohio / Harrison Central). Fechko finished with a 5-1 record on the day highlighted by a 20-4 technical fall over Jarrod Calwery of Elizabeth in his first match. The five wins helped Fechko to reach the 20-win plateau on the year. He now owns an overall record of 20-9.
Carothers took the long route to his final placing. He opened the weekend with a close 8-7 setback, but rattled off six-straight wins to finish third. He battled back with three falls and a major decision. Carothers had the fastest pin at the invite, pinning Spencer Fulk of Manchester in 20 seconds. Following this outing, Carothers joins Feckho in the 20-win column at 23-10.
Brad Rice (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) also took the long path to the podium. At 197 pounds, Rice finished fifth with a record of 6-2. He had two falls and two major decisions. Rice opened the invite with a loss, winning five-straight, before wrestling for the fifth spot.
Rounding out the placers on the weekend was Cory Martinson (Brunswick, Ohio / St. Edwards) at 165 pounds. Martinson went 2-3 with a major decision.
