Canton Native Zach Mizer Earns OAC Weekly Honor
Junior Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry) of the Heidelberg College wrestling team has been tabbed the Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Dec. 15, 2008. Mizer is the first ’Berg wrestler to receive the weekly honor on the 2008-09 campaign.
Over the weekend, at 157 pounds, Mizer posted a 4-1 record at the ONU Invitational hosted by Ohio Northern University in the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio. Mizer finished up runner-up to the number one seeded and no. 2 in the nation Jason Brew of Olivet College. Mizer, seeded second, opened the invitational pinning Cumberland’s Adam Myers in 1:36. He also picked up a 15-3 major decision over Josh Ashbrook of Campbellsville that was sandwiched between two decisions en route to the championship match.
For the year, Mizer is ranked fifth in the latest Brute/Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll at 157 pounds. He boasts an overall record of 12-4 and has recorded five falls and a major decision .
Heidelberg, ranked 24th in the nation, returns to action at the Sunshine Open in Lakeland, Fla. Dec. 28-29 and resumes its OAC dual schedule Jan. 6 with Mount Union College in Seiberling Gymnasium, on the campus of Heidelberg.
