'Berg Grapplers Streak Past JCU
Tiffin, Ohio – February 2, 2010 – The nationally-ranked Heidelberg University wrestling team built an early 12-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 30-9 win over John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual that took place under the spotlight in Seiberling Gymnasium, on the campus of Heidelberg.
The win closes out Heidelberg’s OAC dual mark at 5-1 and are 8-7 overall. The Blue Streaks stand at 2-3 against league foes and 5-6 overall.
Delian Schneider (Tiffin, Ohio / Columbian) came on strong late in the 125 bout to post an 11-8 decision to start the night out on a high note for the Berg.
John Carroll forfeited at 133 pounds giving Heidelberg’s Tom D’Alessandro (Mayfield Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) a victory. Heidelberg extended its lead to 12-0 with a 6-5 decision by Sam Delpra (Chesterland, Ohio / West Geauga) at 141 pounds.
John Carroll got on the board with a major decision at 149 pounds, but the Berg responded by winning the next three straight bouts.
Starting Heidelberg back on the winning track was no. 5 Zach Mizer (Canton, Ohio / Perry). Mizer registered the first of three-consecutive major decisions, topping his opponent 14-0.
Following suit was Matt Curley (Brecksville, Ohio / Lakewood) with a 19-6 major at 165 pounds and Dan Jonhenry (Berea, Ohio / Berea) won 10-2.
The visitors concluded its scoring with a 16-1 technical fall at 184 pounds.
After a scoreless first period at 197 pounds, Heidelberg’s Brad Rice (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) had an escape in the second and scored a takedown in the third to post a 3-1 decision.
Rounding out the scoring for the Berg was Jerry Knapp (North Olmsted, Ohio / North Olmsted). At heavyweight, Knapp responded from a 5-1 deficit after two periods to record a takedown as period three expired to force sudden overtime. Knapp took home an 8-7 decision followed a point for stalling.
