Softball Faces CWRU in Mid-Week Non-Conference Doubleheader

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University softball team will play the seventh and eighth games of its 10-game road trip Wednesday when it faces Case Western Reserve University in a non-conference doubleheader at Mather Park in University Circle, Ohio. The first game is slated for 3:30 p.m.

Heidelberg (10-8, 1-2 Ohio Athletic Conference) split a doubleheader Saturday at Wilmington College, winning the second game to snap a six-game losing streak. Senior first basemen Bessie Artino (Bellevue) was 3-for-7 with a run batted-in and run scored for the day, sophomore left fielder Julie Okorn (Euclid) was 3-for-6 with a run scored and three more had multi-hit days. Junior left handed pitcher Ali Sayre (Sylvania/Northview) hurled a complete game in the second contest, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine.

Artino (.393, 16 RBI, 1 HR, 12 R) leads the offense in batting average and on-base percentage (.424), is second with a .554 slugging percentage and is tied for ninth in the OAC in RBI. Sophomore second baseman Erica Huffman (Strongsville) (.371, 11, 0, 10) is second on the team in batting average and sophomore center fielder Jami Wagner (Alvada/New Riegel) (.365, 2, 0, 19) is tied for sixth in the league in runs and leads the team with 10 stolen bases. Senior right handed pitcher Lexie Pinkelman (Metamore/Evergreen) (.348, 17, 2, 8) is tied for sixth in the circuit in RBI and leads the team with a .630 slugging percentage.

In the circle, Sayre and Pinkelman have combined to start 13 of 18 games. Sayre (1.29 ERA, 35 K, 49.0 IP) is 4-3 in eight appearances, including four complete games and one shutout, and is second in the OAC in ERA and eighth in innings pitched. Pinkelman (3.98, 39, 43.0) is also 3-4 in nine appearances, including five complete games, and is seventh in the league in strikeouts.

CWRU (17-10, 3-5 University Athletic Association) has won two straight games and five of their last seven following a sweep Sunday of Bethany (W.Va.) College. Gena Roberts was a combined 7-for-8 at the plate with a home run, seven RBI and four runs scored, while, in the circle, Rebecca Taylor allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four in 5.0 innings and Christine Hunger allowed 12 runs (two earned) on 11 hits and threw a complete game.

Roberts (.415, 15, 3, 18) paces the offense and leads the team with a .622 slugging percentage. Lauren Wolz (.395, 24, 3, 11) leads the Spartans in RBI and slugging percentage (.516), Molly O’Brien (.368, 7, 0, 23) has a team-high in runs scored and Taylor (.310, 9, 0, 13) is the fourth Spartan hitting above .300.

In the circle, Hunger (2.26, 22, 52.2) is 5-1 in 12 appearances, including eight starts, and has thrown three complete games. Taylor (2.93, 115, 122.2) is 12-9 with one save in 23 appearances and has hurled 15 complete games.

Following Wednesday’s doubleheader, the Berg will close its road stretch Friday in an OAC doubleheader at Muskingum University in New Concord.
