Softball Drops Doubleheader to Alma

TIFFIN, Ohio—Alma (Mich.) College swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Heidelberg University softball team today at Hedges Boyer Park in Tiffin, Ohio. Alma took the first game, 11-1 in six innings, and won the nightcap, 21-13.

Alma (23-9) plated single runs in the top of the first and third innings, then rallied for three more in the fifth, keyed by a two-run double by Rebecca Dewyse, to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Sophomore shortstop Erica Huffman (Strongsville) singled in a run in the fifth to get Heidelberg (15-17) on the board, but the Scots tacked on six runs in the sixth, including a three-run home run by Dewyse to end the game early.

Senior right hander Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora/Evergreen) pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out three and walking two, but suffered the loss to fall to 5-6. Freshman righty Christine Foster (Luckey/Eastwood) hurled 1.2 innings in relief, surrendering six runs on four hits.

Dewyse was 3-for-4 at the plate for Alma with six runs batted-in and one run scored. Erin Rodes was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and one run scored.

Louise Rezmer scattered just five hits over 6.0 innings and struck out nine.

In the second game, the Berg tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by junior second baseman Bridget Moran (Lakewood/Senior) and a bases loaded walk by freshman right handed pitcher Ashley Kessler (North Olmsted).

Alma retook the lead in the second on a two-run triple by Emily Ross, but a solo shot by Huffman and a run-scoring single by sophomore third baseman Kelly Martz (Roseville, Mich./Lakeview) tied the game, 5-5.

A two-run triple in the third by Amanda Schneider keyed a three-run inning for the Scots, but the Berg again answered in the bottom half with a grand slam by senior first baseman Bessie Artino (Bellevue) and a two-run single by Kessler as the Tri-Color regained an 11-8 advantage.

Alma used three consecutive doubles and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to tie the game again, 11-11, and a two-run homer by Ross and a three-run double by Erin Pintek in the sixth anchored a six-run rally as the Scots took a 17-11 lead.

Sophomore center fielder Jami Wagner (Alvada/New Riegel) rapped out a bases loaded single that scored two runs in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to three.

Alma tacked on four more insurance runs in the seventh and held the Berg at bay for the win.

Sophomore left fielder Julie Okorn (Euclid) and Huffman led five players with multi-hit games. Okorn was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs, while Huffman was 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs. Kessler had three RBI.

Kessler logged all 21 outs, but was briefly relieved during the game and fell to 1-1.

Six Scots had multi-hit games in game two, led by Schneider, who was 4-of-5 with four RBI and three runs, and Erin Ross, who was 3-for-6 with six RBI and two runs and was a single off the cycle.

Rezmer worked 3.1 innings of relief and earned her second win of the day to improve to 11-4.

Heidelberg returns to the diamond Wednesday for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Otterbein University if Tiffin.
