2013 Schedule | NFCA Release

Head coach Betsy Hada and the Heidelberg University softball team officially released their 2013 schedule.

Coach Hada’s squad finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 18-20, taking a doubleheader from Wooster in their last contest. The Berg played to a 6-11 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference and just missed out on qualifying for the conference tournament.

‘Berg softball will travel to Clermont, Florida to begin their 2013 campaign on March 9, 2013. The team will play ten games in five days at the National Training Center.

Following their southern swing in Florida, the Berg will play at Defiance College in non-conference action. The game will be played in Defiance, Ohio on March, 20, 2013.

Hada’s women will battle the Crusaders of Capital University to open Ohio Athletic Conference competition. The doubleheader against the Crusaders will be played in Tiffin, on March 23, 2013, at Hedges-Boyer Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Along with their schedule, Heidelberg softball has also caught recognition for their academic excellence. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association released the Top 10 All-Academic Team Rankings. Heidelberg ranks seventh in the nation academically with a collective grade point average of 3.504. Fontbonne University took the top spot with a grade point average of 3.595 followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s 3.589.

“I am very excited to have the hardwork and dedication my team shows both on and off the field recognized by the NFCA,” said Hada, who is entering her fifth season at the helm.

Included on the list were: Bess Artino (Bellevue), Erica Huffman (Strongsville), Ashley Kessler (North Olmsted), Bridget Moran (Lakewood), Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora/Evergreen), Megan Reinhart (Tiffin/Hopewell-Loudon), Ali Sayre (Sylvania/Northview) and Jami Wagner (Alvada/New Riegel).

This season, senior pitcher and Sylvania, Ohio native,  Ali Sayre, who has been a force on the mound as well as in the classroom, will be looking to lead Heidelberg as a captain. On the hill, Sayre has collected 14 wins in 42 appearances. She boasts a career earned run average of 2.37.

In the classroom, Sayre holds a spotless 4.0 grade point average through her junior year. In her three years at Heidelberg, Sayre has interned for a member of the United Kingdom Parliament, tutored students in English at the University of Tianjin in China, served as Secretary-General for Heidelberg at the 63rd Session of the Model United Nations in San Francisco and served as a Residence Assistant on campus.

Ali is currently in Washington D.C. studying for a semester at American University.

“She truly sets the standard for Heidelberg student-athletes,” said Hada. “We try to stress the importance of being students first and athletes second to our players and it rewarding as a coach to see them excel in all the areas of their lives.”
