March 9, 2010 – Ft. Myers, Fla. - The Heidelberg University softball team under the guidance of second-year head coach Betsy Hada, added to its flawless record with two more wins today. The Berg faced Clark University and North Park University at the Cape Coral SportsComplex.
The Berg now boasts a 6-0 record on the season. Clark and North Park drop to 4-1 and 2-1, respectively.
Heidelberg opened the day with a 4-3 win over Clark.
Sophomore Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) pitched a solid, complete game and picked up her third win on the season.
The Berg did most of its damage in the sixth inning. Down 2-1, senior Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) started the rally with a double. Junior Tinleigh Fisher (Columbus, Ohio / Westland) would pitch run for Gerdeman.
Sophomore Bessie Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) would smash a double of her own, which would bring Fisher around the bases to tie it up, 2-2. Sophomore Dani Merritt (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) entered the game to pitch run for Artino.
Freshman Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia) would make it three straight doubles for the Berg, which would score Merritt for the go-ahead run.
Also making an impact at the plate was sophomore Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-London), who went 1-3 with a homerun.
In game two, the Berg was triumphant over North Park by a 3-2 score.
Sophomore Briana Hinz ( Madison, Ohio / Madison) picked up her third win with a complete game, which included three strikeouts and only one earn run.
Down 1-0, the Berg would score all three runs in the fifth inning.
Reinhart got things started with a triple. Freshman Ashley Stromack (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) singled to bring home Reinhart. Freshman Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) would earn a base hit, while sister Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) advanced to first a fielder’s choice. Gerdeman would then hit a clutch double that would bring in both Morans to take the lead.
