Ft. Myers, Fla. - March 11, 2010 - The Heidelberg University softball team earned a split in its last two games of its Florida spring trip today with shutting out Saint Mary’s College 6-0 and losing to the University of Dallas 9-1.
The Berg closes out the spring trip with an impressive 9-1 record.
Against St. Mary’s, sophomore Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) continued her stellar performance on the mound en route to her fifth win. Thoms did not give up a run and retired three.
Offensively, the Berg was in control throughout the entire game beginning in the fourth inning. With bases loaded, sophomore Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) singled in sophomore Bess Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) to take the 1-0 lead.
The sixth inning was showcased by freshman Ashley Stromack (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) hitting a solo homerun. It was her first long ball of her career.
Freshman Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) got things started in the seventh with a single. Senior Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) followed with a base hit of her own. Junior Tinleigh Fisher (Columbus, Ohio / Westland) would enter the game to pitch run for Gerdeman. Atrino would pick up an RBI as she got base hit to bring home Moran, giving the Berg a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Dani Merritt (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington) subbed in for Artino, while freshman Kaitlyn Esordi (Brownstown, Mich. / Oscar A. Carlson) forced a walk.
Stromack would earn a single and would bring in Merritt, while Reinhart took a base on balls. Senior Bobbi Kendeigh (Oberlin, Ohio / Firelands) batted in Stromack, while freshman Natalie Hunt (Maineville, Ohio / Maineville) scored Reinhart to put icing on the cake.
In game two against Dallas, sophomore Briana Hinz ( Madison, Ohio / Madison) received her first loss on the season. Thoms pictched one inning with one unearned run, while freshman Ali Sayre (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania-Northview) pitched two and two-thirds and only gave up one run and earned two strikeouts.
Reinhart led the way at the plate with a homerun in the third inning. Moran went 1-2, while freshman Paige Diers (New Richmond, Ohio / New Richmond) went 1-1.
