Thoms and the Berg Earns Two More Wins

Oberlin, Ohio – March 20, 2010Dana Thoms (Amherest, Ohio / Firelands) performance on the mound led the way for the Heidelberg University softball team in a doubleheader sweep over host Oberlin College today, March 20. The Berg won 12-1 in five innings in game one and 12-4 in game two.

 

Heidelberg now stands at 12-2 overall, while Oberlin falls to 0-8 on the year. The Berg, under the guidance of second-year head coach Betsy Hada, is off to the best start in the history of the program.

 
Thoms was the winning pitcher in both games, improving her record to 8-1. In game one, Thoms pitched a three-hitter, while only giving up one run. Inthe second game she threw 3.2 innings in relief to earn the win. She sruck out four, while giving up seven hits.

 

Offensively in game one, Heidelberg didn’t waste any time putting runs on the board as they scored nine in the first inning. Bess Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) earned a three-run homerun, while freshman Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) hit two in with a single.

 

The Berg would add more runs in the third when Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia) hit a three-run blast over the left center fence. The homer was Brumit’s first of her career.

 

In game two, Heidelberg would put its first runs on the board in the second when Kaitlyn Esordi (Brownstown, Mich. / Oscar A. Carlson) doubled to left center brining in a run.

 

Knotted up at 2-2, the Berg would take the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs and would never look back.

 

Ashley Stromack (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) led with a 3-4 outing to go along with four RBIs and an earn run.
