Springfield, Ohio – March 23, 2010 –The Heidelberg University softball team, under the guidance of second-year head coach Betsy Hada, split a doubleheader today against nonconference foe Wittenberg University. The Berg lost 5-4 in game one, while rebounding in game two in win 9-2. The Berg now stands at 13-3 overall, while the Tigers falls to 4-6 on the year.
Game one consisted of a back and forth battle with each team fighting for the lead. The Berg put its first runs on the board when Kaitlyn Esordi (Brownstown, Mich. / Oscar A. Carlson) led off the third with a solo homerun to tie it 1-1. This marked Esordi's first homer of her career.
Down two runs in the fourth, Heidelberg responded with Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) and Ohio Athletic Conference hitter of the week Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) earning each an RBI to once again knot things up.
Heidelberg would take a 4-3 lead in the fifth, however the Tigers would score in the bottom of the fifth and in the seventh to capture the win.
In game two, Heidelberg game out with a will to win and would take and early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Bess Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) hit a two run blast over left field. This marks Artino’s second-straight game with a multi-run homerun. The Berg would never lose the lead for the rest of game.
The Berg would add three more runs in the third which included Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia) and Ashley Stromack (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) each earning an RBI.
Stromack and Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) would pick up an RBI from back-back singles, while Esordi would double to left field bringing in a run to close things out in the seventh.
On the mound, Ali Sayre (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania-Northview) was dominate earning her second win on the season, while pitching a complete game with only allowing two runs on five hits.
In 2010 Heidelberg has had solid representation on the diamond by both its baseball and softball teams, as both sides are off to one of its best starts in the history of its program.
