Tiffin, Ohio – April 17, 2010 –The Heidelberg University softball team, under the guidance of second-year head coach Betsy Hada, split a doubleheader today against conference foe Marietta College at Mayer Field. The Berg won 3-2 in game one and fell 22-5 in game two.
For the season the Berg boasts a 19-9 overall record, 5-5 in the OAC, while the Pioneers stand at 16-11, 4-6 against league foes.
In game one, Marietta took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Heidelberg responded in fifth inning scoring three runs with two outs. Senior Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) first got the Berg on the board with a double bringing in freshman Kaitlyn Esordi (Brownstown, Mich. / Oscar A. Carlson). Gerdeman now has a team-leading eight RBI with two outs and runners in scoring position.
Stromack followed and singled home Gerdeman and Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood), while the Berg took a 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers would add one more in the sixth, but wouldn’t be able to overcome its deficit.
Stromack led with a 1-for-3 outing, with two RBI. Also earning a hit was Moran, sophomore Bess Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue), Gerdeman, Esordi, and freshman Paige Diers (New Richmond, Ohio / New Richmond).
Sophomore pitcher Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) threw a complete game, giving up two runs off 9 hits and retired six batters. Thoms picked up her tenth win on the season.
Despite Heidelberg’s great heart and effort for the duration of the game in game two, Pioneers mustered 22 runs off 19 hits to win the game in five innings.
Thoms went 1.1 innings, while give up four runs (three earned) off six hits and struck out one. She goes to 10-7 on the year. Freshman Jamie Wright (Cleveland, Ohio / Lakewood) saw her first action on the mound this season. Wright went 3.1 innings giving up 12 runs off 9 hits and struck out 1, while walking seven.
Offensively Reinhart earned her team-leading ninth double of the year, while going 2-for-3 with and a RBI. Also earning an RBI was Moran, Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood), and junior Tinleigh Fisher (Columbus, Ohio / Westland).
The Berg is back in action, Tuesday, April 20, when it hosts Baldwin-Wallace College at 3:30 p.m.
