‘Berg Earns Split With Otterbein

Westerville, Ohio – April 27, 2010 –The Heidelberg University softball team earned a split in a doubleheader today with Ohio Athletic Conference foe Otterbein College. Heidelberg lost game one 8-4 and rebounded to win game two 6-4.

 

The Berg improves to 22-12 overall, 7-7 in the OAC, while the Cardinals stands at 7-23, 2-12 against league foes.

 

Otterbein got on the board first with an RBI double. The Berg matched with a run of its own in the top of the second inning when Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia) scored off Megan Reinhart’s (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) bat.

 

The Cardinals piled on seven runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

 

Heidelberg would not give up and would continue to battle throughout the duration of the game with scoring two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

 

Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) and Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) would each pick up an RBI single in the fifth, while Kaitlyn Esordi (Brownstown, Mich. / Oscar A. Carlson) homered to left center in the sixth. It marked Esordi’s third long ball on the year.

 

Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) pitched her 15th complete game on the year, while giving up eight runs (seven earned) off 11 hits. Thoms walked one while striking out one batter. She goes to 12-9 on the season.

 

In game two, the Cardinals would again take an early 1-0 lead. However, Heidelberg would capture the lead in the top of the second when Brumit and Natalie Hunt (Maineville, Ohio / Maineville) hit back-to back homers. Hunt’s homer was the first of her career.

 

Up 2-1, the Berg would score four more runs in the fourth. Esordi scored first on a throwing error by Otterbein. Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf), Brumit, and Bridget Moran would each earn an RBI. Gerdeman now has a team-leading 26 RBI.

 

Otterbein who add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but would not be able to overcome Heidelberg’s lead.

 

Ali Sayre (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania-Northview) pitched a complete game, while giving up four runs, only two earned off seven hits. She had no walks and retired one. Sayre improves to 7-2 on the year.

 

Gerdeman and Brumit each went 2-for-4. Brumit led the way with 2 RBI.
